Granville Messer was born 1853, Perry County, Kentucky, the son of Haney Messer and Henry Southern. Granville had eight siblings: Elijah Messer, Alexander E. "Alex" Messer, Jane/Jincey Messer, William H. Messer, Robert Messer, George Washington "Wash" Messer, Sally Messer and James Benton Messer.
Granville married Mary Martha Parks and they had seven children: Daisy Messer, Hattie Messer, Corsia Messer, Grace L. "Gracie" Messer, Henry Southern Messer, Troy Charles Messer and James Kelly Messer. Granville was a farmer, logger and also worked on the roads. He owned 500 acres with a large peach and apple orchard on his property.
