Can You run for Public Office?

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE TO RUN?

It is your fundamental right to run for office; however, some limitations do exist. Review the requirements for the office to make sure you meet the minimum age requirement, residency requirement and other requirements.

“Residence” has been defined by the West Virginia Supreme Court as the place where you actually live. A business location is not a residence. Property which you rent to someone else is not a residence.

A post office box does not 3 establish residence. Some offices require you to be a resident for a length of time before election, by the time of filing for office or by the time of taking office.

Also, make sure you are not prohibited from running by reviewing the requirements set by the United States Constitution, West Virginia Constitution, West Virginia State Election laws and Ethics Regulations.

The Secretary of State and county and municipal officials do not normally determine disputes about a candidate’s eligibility. Such legal disputes are normally resolved in court.

  1. If a person works full time in Georgia, they actually live in Georgia. Is this a newsflash to anyone? Would any judge disagree? Missy Bennett is not the final word on this. I'm sure, being an elected official, she wants to stay friends with everybody, like the Sharps.

  2. So when can we start ripping down Sharp's fake campaign signs? I'm so sick of the out right fraud in this county and they don't even try to hide it. There is no morals or ethics in our county.

  4. Mr. Sharp is in the wrong and we all know it. He drinks and partys. I bet he doesn't even attend any church. If he does win will he let all of his drinking buddys go free when caught ? I think he will and thats the only reason they will vote for him.

  5. Good god Norman you're just never happy unless you're getting people in a uproar over stupid stuff. At least Grimes is getting a break.

  7. Get out and vote and make the change, Cynthia Broce Kelley needs to go packing!! She is not fair or impartial, we see where she stands, with the ones in Blue. Make the change while you can. Randy Irvine has my vote.

  8. When is Robbie Sharp going to stop his fake campaign? If he by chance he does win, Will he be sued for not living in the county? How will he even do the job if he wins since he lives in GA ? How is this even going to work ?

  9. Just get a WV drivers license and anyone can run for office. I live and work out of the county but still have a valid WV drivers license and that's all it takes to prove your a resident, it's pathetic how the state regulates residency. Just file, show your valid ID with a Pocahontas County address and your in. So easy for anyone to do and just go back and work your job in another county as two candidates are doing for Magistrate in division 2 while being dishonest to the people in the county.
