DESCENDANTS OF JAMES SCHOOLCRAFT
                   =========== == ===== ===========

                           Don Norman

The country of origin of the WV Schoolcrafts is not known. At least one writer speculates that the line may have originated in Lancashire County, England, since the name is common there, and other American lines originated in that County.
It is also possible that the WV line originated in Germany and that "Shoolcraft" was an Anglacized spelling of a German name.
Another school of thought identifies James Calcraft as founder of the Schoolcraft line.  As of January 1995, there is not enough evidence to connect these two genealogies and James Calcraft's line will be the subject of a paper titled "Descendants of James Calcraft."

1.JAMES SCHOOLCRAFT

The earliest recorded ancestor of the WV line on the American
continent is Private James Schoolcraft, a British soldier stationed at
Albany, New York in 1712.  James is known to have gone absent without
leave and was pardoned by Governor Robert Hunter of New York.  James
was in the British Army as late as December 1713.
James was closely associated with a "Palatine" or German
settlement in the Schoharie, New York area.  He took at least one wife
and possibly two, from  the Palatine settlements.  Only two of James'
children are recorded.

2.CHRISTIAN SCHOOLCRAFT     1.JAMES SCHOOLCRAFT

Little is known of Christian Schoolcraft, except that he remained
loyal to the crown during the American revolution and had three sons
who served the crown in that conflict.  This branch of the family
allegedly fled to Canada after the Colonial victory.
Perhaps this is a good point to insert a letter concerning the
Schoolcrafts.  This letter was written by Margaret Bush and was
postmarked April 1, 1868 at 33 Courtlandt Street, NY and was addressed
to J.M. Bennett, Buckhannon, Upshur County, WV.
     The letter reads as follows:
"To the best of my recollection of the famous Schoolcraft
family on this 24th day of March in the year of our Lord 1868, I,
Margaret Bush, sworn and subscribe this is written in my own hand."
"William and Austead Schoolcraft were brothers, William had a son
Matthew, don't know no more of this line.  Austead had 2 sons, James
1737 who had son James II 1775 who married Mary Carpenter and second
wife was Catharine Bush whom he married when he was 50 years old on
June 18, 1825, performed by Rev. John Mitchell.  Catharine was borne
October 1805 and is the daughter of Adam and Margaret Bush, my
namesake."
"Austead second son was John 1745 whose wife was killed by
Indians in September 1779.  Their children were John 1761, Jacob 1762,
who married Mary Ann Parsons, Leonard 1763, Lucy 1764, Matthias 1765,
Mary 1766, Martha 1766, Simon 1768, Michael 1769, Austin 1770, Sarah
1772, Polly 1773, Nancy 1774 and Charity 1774.  When Indians killed
Mrs. Schoolcraft eight of her small babies was killed to, Lucy, Mary,
Martha, Austin, Sarah, Polly, Nancy and Charity.  Matthias, Simon and
Michael was captured by Indians in 1781 on Pigeon Roost of Stonecoal,
Matthias was killed and Simon and Michael remained with the Indians.
Jacob escaped.  Leonard was 16 when he was captured in 1779 and made
to run the gauntlet and was recognized many times while making raids
on the whiteman.  Jacob had these children, Aaron, James, Mary, Ann,
John and Permilia."
Margaret Bush cannot be positively identified, but she is
believed to be either Margaret Bush born 1833, daughter of William and
Mary (Wallace) Bush or Margaret Bush, born 1834, daughter of Paulcer
and Elizabeth (Heckert) Bush.
If Margaret is the daughter of William and Mary Bush, the
Margaret (Hagle) Bush she refers to as "my namesake", was her great
aunt.  If she is the daughter of Paulcer and Elizabeth (heckert) Bush,
Margaret (Hagle) Bush was her grandmother.
In either case, we can assume that Margaret's information is
generally correct, because her family was connected with the
Schoolcrafts by marriage.
There are discrepancies between her letter and other information.
She identifies Astien's brother as William, while other sources list
him as Christian.  Also, Margaret's dates of birth for Astien's
children are at variance with recorded ages and she records Jacob
Schoolcraft as having married Mary Ann Parsons, when records report
that Mary Ann Parsons married Thomas Cottrell Jr. and Rebecca Parsons
married Jacob Schoolcraft.
These variations do not detract from the value of Margaret's
record; she was probably working from memories of stories told by her
parents and grandparents about events that happened years before her
birth.

3.ASTIEN SCHOOLCRAFT     1.JAMES SCHOOLCRAFT

Astien Schoolcraft, a son of James Schoolcraft, was baptized
at  Schenectady, New York in 1720  and was probably born that year.
He  married Catherine Countryman in the Schoharie New York area.  The
baptisms of two children are recorded at Schoharie; James in 1743 and
Matthias in 1745.
Astien and Catharine left Schoharie after 1745 and in 1749, the
baptism of their daughter, Catherine Lisabetha, is recorded at
Tulpehocken, Berks County, Pennsylvania.  Astien's presence is
recorded in Augusta County VA in 1760 and the family was residing in
what is now Highland County VA in 1766.  Astien and his sons, John and
Matthias, all claimed land on the south Branch of the Potomac River in
that year.  Their names also appear on the delinquent tax rolls for
1766, suggesting that they may have encountered financial problems.
They never received titles for their land and certificates
issued by the Commissioners in Clarksburg, VA (WV) in 1781 indicate
that the family had come to what is now Upshur and Lewis Counties in
VA in 1774.
Although it is not known whether the Schoolcrafts were in the
Battle of Point Pleasant in September of 1774 during Lord Dunmore's
War, John, James, Matthias and Matthew were all on the rolls of the
militia companies during the period, so they must have played some
part in the campaign.
Astien was killed by Indians in 1780 in the area of present day
Buckhannon, WV.

4.JOHN SCHOOLCRAFT     3.ASTIEN SCHOOLCRAFT     1.JAMES
SCHOOLCRAFT

John Schoolcraft, a son of Astien and Catharine (Countryman)
Schoolcraft, was born about 1740 in the area of Schoharie, New York
and came to Fink's Run, near Buckhannon Fort, about 1774 with his
family.  His brother James settled on the main fork of Fink's Run in
1774, and John Schoolcraft settled on Stone Coal Run in 1775.  They
each obtained a certificate for 400 acres in 1781 (their land joined
and John's land  bordered land of Henry Flesher).  (The current
highway between Buchannon and Weston crosses Stone Coal Run). Matthew,
another brother, claimed 400 acres on Sand Fork in Lewis County in
1774.
Although no documentary proof is in evidence, one account alleged that John married Miotoka Nyeswanan, a Deleware Incian pricess, daughter of Bemino, or John Killbuck Sr.
In the spring of 1779, Leonard Schoolcraft, 16 year old son of
John, was captured by Indians near Buchannon Fort and carried into
captivity.  In September 1779, Indians attacked the John Schoolcraft
homestead on Fink's run and John's wife and eight of their children
were killed and two sons, Simon and Michael, were captured.
In April 1781, the last three children were fired upon  by
Indians, as they were returning from a nearby "Pigeon Roost" on
Stone Coal Creek.  Matthias was killed, then John and Jacob were
made prisoner.  Thus within two years, this family of sixteen was
entirely broken up.  Nine of the children and the mother were killed
and three boys swept away into captivity.
Leonard Schoolcraft stayed with the Indians, turned renegade,
and led raids along the frontier.  There has been some speculation
that Leonard was the leader of the group that killed Astien
Schoolcraft in 1780 and that he was also involved in the 1781 incident
when Matthias was killed.  Dennis B. Rodgers, writing in The Hacker's
Creek Journal,  says:

"Based upon his later conduct, we know that Leonard had the
capability for murder.  The evidence is pretty clear that a little
over eight years after his capture, in December of 1787, he was the
leader of a small band of Indians who ventured into the Hacker's Creek
Settlement, seemingly for the purpose of killing Mary Ann Hacker, the
then new wife of Edmund West Jr."

John and Jacob were held in captivity until nearly grown before
they managed to escape.  The boy adapted so readily to their
environment that they were eventually entrusted with guns and a
limited amount of ammunition for which they were required to account
at the close of each day's hunt.  They were able to hoard a few
bullets, and charges of powder, along with some jerky, so one morning
they left as if for a hunt, but started toward frontier settlements
along a well worn Indian trail.  Their knowledge of woodslore made
their trail extremely difficult to follow and at times impossible.
Once they hid in a cavern in a high cliff with a good view of the
trail.  Towards sundown, a small band of Indians passed in pursuit,
and the following evening, the baffled warriors repassed on their
return home.
That night the boys continued their flight, making a detour and
striking the trail several miles ahead.  When they finally approached
West's Fort (near present-day Clarksburg) they were mistaken for
Indians and nearly fired-upon.  By holding-up their reversed guns and
making signs of peace they were received without incident.  They later
traveled to Wappatomaka, where their father had gone after his family
was destroyed.
The father, John Sr., was reportedly over joyed at the return of
the prodigals, however, he indentured his son John to John Wolf in
1784 and John Wolf dropped a pending law suit against John Sr. The
younger John was set at liberty from servitude to John Wolf by the
Harrison County Court April 19, 1791.
In 1786, Peter Kinshelo sued John Sr. for almost ten pounds due
on various goods, including a gallon of whiskey.  John's name
disappears from the court records after 1787, indicating that he
either died or moved on to less troubled climes.
Young John applied for a Revolutionary War pension on July 25,
1833, in Lewis County, claiming service as an Indian spy in Ohio under
Ebenezer Zane.  This claim was denied, on the grounds that John was
simply too young.  (He was 14 at the time of his indenture to John
Wolf in 1784).
In Volume VII, Issue 4 of "The Hacker's Creek Journal", E.J.
Schoolcraft reports that John Schoolcraft's wife was an Indian woman
named Miotoka Nyeswanan and that a sister of John's wife had married
Jacob Brake Sr. of Hardy County, VA (WV).  He names Janet Cosgrove of
Buckhannon, WV as his source.
However, a perusal of the Stump family history reveals that
Jacob Brake Sr.'s wife was Catharine Stump.  Catharine, a daughter of
Michael and Catharine Stump, was born in Germany October 22, 1741 and
died after April 9, 1816.
Of course, this information does not prove that John
Schoolcraft's wife was not an Indian, but it does cast doubt upon the
theory that Jacob Brake Jr.'s activities had any connection with the
Indian raids on the Schoolcrafts.

5.JAMES SCHOOLCRAFT     3.ASTIEN SCHOOLCRAFT     1.JAMES
SCHOOLCRAFT

James Schoolcraft, a son of Astien and Catharine (Countryman)
Schoolcraft, was born in the Schoharie New York area about 1743.
Apparently, James did not move the Hacker's Creek area until 1784,
although he did make a trip to Clarksburg in 1781 to obtain a
certificate for land on Fink's Run.  By 1784, James was the head of a
family of eight living on Hacker's Creek.  His mother, Catharine
(Countryman) Schoolcraft, was a member of this family.
James' name appears on the tax rolls for the last time in 1794.
There appears to have been some sort of tragedy that wiped out most of
the family.  In April 1795, Catharine Schoolcraft, a daughter of
Elizabeth, was bound to John Hagle.  This is probably James' daughter.
In 1810, fifteen year old John the Baptist Schoolcraft was bound
to George Deakon.  Some believe that John the Baptist was a son of
James and Elizabeth, born the same year that his parents died and that
he was raised by James and Mary (Carpenter) Schoolcraft.
Unfortunately, only one of James' children, James, can be documented.

Jacob Schoolcraft, a son of John Schoolcraft, was born in VA.
His birth date is not certain, since it is reported as before 1765 in
the 1810 and 1820 censuses, between 1770 and 1780 in the 1830 census
of Wood County Va and 1759 in Hampshire County in his Revolutionary
War pension claim. (#R9268).  He died in Gilmer County, Virginia (WV),
in 1850.
He married Rebecca Parsons, a daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth
(Bush) Parsons. Jacob and Rebecca settled on the West Fork of the
Little Kanawha River, where at one time they owned most all of Bear
Run.

SCHOOLCRAFT     1.JAMES SCHOOLCRAFT

James Schoolcraft is believed to be a son of James and Elizabeth
Schoolcraft and is believed to have been born in the Schoharie of New
York in 1774.  He moved to Harrison County VA with his parents about
1784.  A few years afterward, both his parents died and he married
Mary Carpenter in Harrison county in 1795.  Mary was a daughter of
Solomon and Sudna (Hughes) Carpenter.
According to information from Dennis B. Rodgers, the couple is
believed to have had one child about 1798.  Mary probably died
sometime between 1798 and 1810.
James remarried and his family appears in the 1820 census of
Butler County, Ohio.  His second wife died, probably about 1820.
His third wife was Elizabeth -----, whom he married about 1821.
The family moved to Washington Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana in
1828 and James died there November 30, 1834. Elizabeth died there June
21, 1860.

Martha (Hall) Schoolcraft June 21, 1855 in Calhoun County VA (WV). She
married Nathan Cottrill in Gilmer county WV November 20, 1872.
Nathan, a son of Thomas Jr. and Mary Ann (Parsons) Cottrell,
was born April 12, 1854, in Calhoun County WV on the left fork of the
West Fork of the Little Kanawha River. Nathan reported his occupation
as ginseng digger in at least one census report, and Coy Norman
remembered how he had seen his grandfather set out "sangin'".  Coy
said that Nathan carried his lunch and a very small, specially made
mattock in a cloth sack.  This mattock took a very small handle, and
Nathan would cut a stick for a handle each day, rather than carry a
handle. Nancy Jane died about 1911 on Tanner's Fork of the Right Fork
of Steer Creek in Gilmer County WV, and is buried in the Cottrell
Simmons cemetery on Tanner's Fork. Nathan died July 5, 1927 (while
living with his  son, French on Tanner's Fork.  Nathan is buried in
the Cottrell cemetery at the head of Frozen run.
