Helmick Costs the Town of Marlinton Over 8 Million Dollars.

Ironically, Helmick's buddy and business pal managed to get his hands on $500,000 of the Town's hard earned interest money as a low interest loan.  Kinda of a kick in the teeth to the town.

A major part of town burns to the ground and instead of giving the 8 million to the town to rebuild, Helmick tells the flood projection part of government that the flood wall project is dead.  8.5 million would have gone a long ways to rebuilding Marlinton.

But Boxley needed the money more for the Millpoint development than Marlinton needed to rebuild.  With Friends like that, who needs enemies??????

Great Going, Walt!!!!

Remember, the Commentator told you that nothing would come of the rebuilding project!!!

  1. The gov't giveth.....& the gov't taketh away.
....& so goes the story of wv.
This entire state would go belly up if it werent for the federal boondoggles, handouts, and slush funds.

$200 million is a ridiculious amount to 'invest' in efforts to protect a dead town.
no telling how many millions the army corps wasted while 'researching' the project for 7 years.

whats more telling is the mentality of local leaders to keep money that isnt theirs.
maybe some of those funds could have been siphoned off to help create the legal defense fund for JL ii.

  2. your blind hatred of helmick is obviously; walt didn't give the money back, walt didn't give it to his friends, etc. fortunately, you are in a very distinct minority about walt as he was overwhelmingly elected and supported by pocahontas folks and statewide

    1. I don't blame walt for the 8 mill going back to the state but I would be surprised to see he didn't have a hand in the box comp[any getting the loan a loan to someone walt is friends with would be of no surprise to me.
after all its the Charleston way of politicians to help your friends not the people.
You must be one of those fools who buys his farmer routine what he farms is beyond me dirt or air are the only crops other than BS he has raised for a good many years.
Yes 200 mil invested in a town that's all but dead is a waste and Marlinton didn't stand a chance of getting federal funds and walt knew that.

    2. Norman is in a very small minority this is true.
Its the group that actually knows how politicians work not just locally but at state and federal levels.
The hind end kissing the pay off the back scratching the vote buying and the wallet filling all from those who influence how they vote and what they support.
The fact that you don't understand it and fail to understand that everything they do must be watched like a 2 year old playing outside by a pool , or marrying a nympho and you travel tells me your either uninformed or a fool.

  3. this move ought to be a loud and clear 'investment signal' to kristy and the others who lost out in the fire.
if the feds dont see it worthwhile to invest in, why should anyone else?
take the money and run. get out while you can and count your blessings.
wv is one of the most business unfriendly states in the nation.
'wv is open for business' because there is none left there.

  4. No amount of money will save Marlinton , what is needed is a company to move in that will provide a few hundred jobs that pay a living wage to start otherwise the youth will continue to leave, drug use will continue to spread and our non professionals in the Sheriffs office and P.A. will continue to be just that .
Many want it to stay just like it is there so they can be big fish in a small pond that's drying up.
They know its drying up but don't care as long as they are the big fish.
Anyone with skills has pretty well left or works away from home.
Before a company moves to a area they check it out, anyone who's checked out our community's political leaders ,PA, office or Sheriffs office know this is a unfriendly grounds.
Also when they see the people who really run the county who are totally self serving and out for them self ( we all know who they are) them we score a big zero considering the road access to major interstates we have you have to be willing to give up something to get a real player to move in.
Hell you cant even have a business sign or parking in town without someone crying . A big player is not going to play children's games like that. with the city and county fathers.

  5. Something I want to say here that I feel people should think about.
Often people vote for others because of a name, because the person puts on a good front and comes off visually and on paper as being the right person for the job,
Excuse my language here but often they get the vote because they are the best bull shitter and liar.
Sometimes its cause they score well in all areas.
People rarely ask the right questions and when in office they rarely demand answers in the form of a large group such as with the Sheriff and the camera issue and many more.
We put people who have done little to nothing back in office term after term usually and never really question them unless a newspaper gets a hold of a really juicy story which is rare.
In the case of the times your not going to see that but you might see it here. But not enough people are willing to take action.
I have seen skunk after skunk paraded on these pages for years and the people don't have the backbone to take action.
When a few hundred people show up on the court house steps and demand answers there is a change something will happen. This should of happened with the Totten case when the P.A. and Rowe caved in to the lets give the poor boy a break after all he was one of us , instead of this guys a serial predator that never needs to be released on a female population again.
Justice was not done but the good old boy system of how they treat their own is clearly alive and well and they have been allowed to get away with it yet again.
I put this here in hopes it will be seen . Mod please put it where you desire or don't print it or do print it .
People around here need to learn to vote for the right person not the biggest bull shitters and crooks until you do it wont change.
I mean look at who controls the power in Pocahontas county and say with a straight face you didn't know.
Maybe one day you will figure out why Pocahontas county is treated by people with outside money to invest as if its got the plague.

  6. Just something to think about here.
That 550,000.00 could of been loaned to the town as a no interest loan to help build business locations such as the dirt bean babe was talking about.
She has a very good point.
